FAQ

facials

You don't know what your skin needs? We offer a 15 min free consultations that is the perfect starting point. One of our estheticians will guide you to the perfect service based on your skin type, concern, and needs!

I’m unsure of which facial to schedule? Choosing a facial can become overwhelming when looking at the service menu! We recommend scheduling an Anti-Aging Facial for your first visit simply to have the time needed for an in- person consultation and facial. After your esthetician evaluates your skin, she will be able to change the type of appointment (if needed) at that time.

If you have any questions about your initial Acne Consultation email us at admin@skinandsugar.co

I have an important event coming up. How should I plan my facial services before my event? For special occasions and/or weddings we recommend coming in at least 6 weeks prior so that we can make sure your skin reacts well to our products and services. If you are unable to do so, a dermaplane or facial is recommended a full 24-48 hours (48 hours preferably) prior to the event.

Can I get a facial if I have Botox or dermal fillers? Do not schedule a facial until 2 weeks after any Botox or dermal filler injections as manipulation of the skin can cause the product to move or be displaced and cause uneven results.

Is it safe to get a facial while pregnant? Yes, we are able to customize all of our facials for each individual, so we will cater the products we use to make sure everything is safe! We will also make sure you are as comfortable as possible by providing extra pillows since you will be laying on your back.

How should I prepare for my facial? We recommend discontinuing the use of retinoids 24 hours prior to your appointment. You can wear makeup to your appointment if needed, and your esthetician will double cleanse your skin to ensure it is all removed prior to your service! If you would like to discuss product regimen or recommendations, you can bring the products you have/use in a bag or take pictures of them to discuss with your esthetician.

What products do you use for facial services? We use GlyMed Plus Skincare, DMK Skincare and Face Reality for facial treatments, and also have their products available for purchase as retail.

What is dermaplaning? Dermaplaning is a method of deep exfoliation that uses a surgical scalpel at a 45 degree angle to slough off the top layer of skin, removing dead cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz) leaving your skin glowing! Removing the hair this way does not affect the hair follicle or root so it is impossible for the hair to grow back thicker/darker. Dermaplaning prepares skin to readily accept products, allowing ingredients to reach their full potential. Consistent dermaplaning evens skin tone and reduces the appearance of scars. Add this service to any custom facial for maximum results!

How can I make sure I have the best post-facial results?/What do I need to do after I have a facial?

  • Avoid working out and wearing makeup for at least 24 hours.

  • Avoid touching your skin as bacteria can transfer easily.

  • Clean your makeup brushes weekly.

  • Wear SPF! Your skin is going to be more vulnerable to sun damage after a facial so it is imperative that you reapply throughout the day.

  • Sleep on a fresh pillowcase every night.

  • Wait 48-72 hours to exfoliate (facial scrubs, AHAs/BHAs, retinol).

What is your return policy on products? We encourage our clients to try samples of our products to avoid having to make a return as well as to test for any possible allergies/reactions. However, if a return is necessary the following policies apply:

  • Unopened products may be returned within 30 days of purchase.

  • If the product has been opened and is in a PUMP or BOTTLE it can be returned for a full refund within 7 days of purchase due to a reaction only.

  • If it is in a JAR it is considered ‘contaminated’ upon opening, therefore we cannot accept any returns.

  • All products purchased at any discount are considered “Final sale” and cannot be returned.

  • No returns on DMK products unless irritation occurs with an esthetician evaluation.

What skincare line Skin & Sugar use? Skin & Sugar uses GlyMed Plus Skincare for all facials and specialty facials. GlyMed Plus formulas are void of harmful, harsh, and counterfeit ingredients, chemicals, and animal by-products and testing. Additionally, we use DMK Skincare for our DMK Enzyme Therapy Treatments.

The Acne Bootcamp uses Face Reality Skincare for all acne treatments.

sugaring

What is sugaring? How does it work? This ancient middle eastern method of hair removal uses an all-natural paste of sugar, water, and lemon juice applied at room temperature. Unlike waxing, sugar is applied in the opposite direction of hair growth and flicked off in the same direction of hair growth. This removes hair from the root without breakage, preventing irritation and the chance of ingrown hairs. With consistent treatments the hair follicle collapses, resulting in permanent hair loss.

Is there an age requirement for bikini/brazilian sugaring? Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to their first appointment to be sugared in the bikini area. Anyone between the ages of 16-18 can get a Full Bikini or Extended Bikini sugar without parental consent. You must be at least 18 years old to get a Brazilian sugar without being accompanied by a parent.

How can I prepare for my sugaring appointment? You can gently exfoliate the area the day before to remove the dead skin which can make the hair removal easier. We recommend wearing loose/soft clothing to your appointment (cotton or silk underwear, avoid lace) to prevent irritation before and after sugaring.

How long does my hair need to be for sugaring? For sugar removal, at least 10-14 days of hair growth is needed (around the length of a grain of rice).

Does sugaring hurt? We strive to keep you as comfortable as possible the entire time. As sugaring is a method of hair removal, there can be moments of discomfort. Our estheticians will check in with you multiple times during the service and can stop at any time if needed! Most of our clients say the result is worth the short period of discomfort.

What is the difference between the bikini sugars?

  • Bikini ($36): removes the hair on the bikini line

  • Extended Bikini ($46): removes the hair on the bikini line + 2 finger-widths further in on top and sides

  • Almost Everything Extended Bikini ($56): removes all of the hair on top, leaving lips and backside

  • Almost Everything Brazilian ($66): removes all of the hair on top + your choice of the lips OR backside

  • Brazilian ($76): removes all of the hair on the front and backside

If you’re still unsure of what to schedule, just schedule a Women’s Brazilian so we have enough time for anything, and we will update the service at checkout!

What kind of sugar do you use? We use KeKo sugar paste which is sold to licensed professionals only.

Why can’t I book a full leg sugar online? We require two estheticians for a full leg sugar as it is a longer service. You can give us a call or email us to schedule! The service usually takes 45 minutes-1 hour.

I have an important event coming up. How should I time my sugaring services before my event? If you are going to get a spray tan, do so after sugaring as sugar can remove some of the spray tan unevenly. If you are sugaring for a vacation or special event, know that you will have minimal to no growth for up to 2 weeks.

What do I need to do after a sugaring appointment? Depending on the area of hair removal and your skin’s level of sensitivity, you may have some redness or slight irritation for up to 48 hours after your service. This is normal, but wearing loose clothing will help avoid irritation in the area. For best results, refrain from working out, swimming or any activity that can cause friction to the area for 12-24 hours after your appointment. Wait to exfoliate the area for 2-3 days after your appointment.

How can I prevent and/or treat ingrown hairs? We carry several products that can be used to prevent and/or treat ingrown hairs. We ask that you consult with your esthetician for recommendations on which products will benefit you. Consistent exfoliation and moisturizing of the skin is key in preventing and treating ingrown hairs. Many clients find that they have less ingrown hairs with sugaring as opposed to waxing as it pulls the hair out with the direction of growth instead of against it, causing less irritation.

Can I get a bikini sugar during my menstrual cycle? Absolutely! Please wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup for your service. There may be some additional discomfort since the area tends to be more sensitive during your cycle.

Can I get a bikini sugar while pregnant? Absolutely! We will make sure you are as comfortable as possible and provide extra pillows since you will be lying on your back. Note that there may be some additional discomfort since the area tends to be more sensitive during pregnancy.
